Osama bin Laden is DEAD!

Osama bin Laden from today's VOANews.com article about his death.

As I was preparing a post to publish on Monday morning, I ran into a news flash stating Osama bin Ladin was dead. I thought it was a joke, but then I found news articles all over the web with the same information.

President Obama announced it 25 minutes before midnight EDT on Sunday, May 1, 2001.

I can’t imagine the explosion occurring in the blogosphere right now. If it were one of those old telephone exchanges where the ladies used to physically transfer each call, the board would be lit up with phone calls, even this late into the U.S. night.

In a nutshell, this is what Newsmax reported about the incident. CIA operatives and the U.S. military cornered bin Laden in a mansion outside Islamabad, Pakistan. “He was killed in a highly secure compound, built in 2005, that was a virtual fortress of 15-foot-high walls and barbed wire.” Initial reports suggest Pakistani intelligence was critical to the success of the mission.

The whole operation, “conducted by an elite team of U.S. Navy Seals, CIA officers and other special military commandos,” lasted only 40 minutes, but after several weeks of covert surveillance and five secret meetings between bin Laden and his cabinet. The New York Times reported that bin Laden resisted and was shot in the head. His body was buried at sea.

What does this event mean for the world? The end of an era has come to an end almost a decade after it began. But what’s next? Heightened security for U.S. military installations around the world is what a senior Pentagon official stated during Obama’s late-night address to the nation, since retaliation is expected from his remaining followers.

So, anybody else feel like this isn’t real … yet?
