Format a Manuscript to Submit to a Contest, Magazine or Other Publication
Posted on July 25, 2011
I just received a request from one of our members here asking how to format a manuscript to submit to a publication — in this case, it was the Good Housekeeping Fiction Contest I noted on a previous post. Don’t worry, there’s still time if you want to check it out.
I found good starting instructions on a Wikipedia article that aligns with the essential requirements I’ve been taught. Although individual publisher standards take precedent, the basics are as follows:
- 1-inch margins
- double-spaced text
- 12-point font
- indent first line of each paragraph
- no extra space between paragraph — only double-space like the rest of the content
- page numbers
- author name, contact information and manuscript name
I found more specialized writing instructions at Writing World about formatting and submitting your manuscript to specific types of publications. Here’s also a YouTube video that helps with formatting your manuscript.
Thoroughly read and understand the contest or individual publication’s submission rules before submitting your manuscript. If you have questions, submit your questions to the contact provided in the submission requirements or of the organization hosting the contest or publication.
Contests often have specific genres or categories of publication — e.g., fiction, poetry, etc. — and specific guidelines for each genre. Don’t just follow the general rules, but make sure you understand and adhere to the specific guidelines of the genre or category for which you submit a manuscript.
For all those brave souls embarking on the submission of manuscripts — I salute you!

Great post, Sherry! We rack our creative brains to produce the content that we can forget about this important part of the process! I’ve actually never seen a manuscript before, so these were awesome examples! Thank you. =)

Thanks, Sam. I’m glad you liked the post and that the examples were helpful. You knowwwww, some day you may want to consider writing a book about your adventures in Huayanco. You have a lot of it written already on your blog. It’s a thought — 😉

Hmm! I’ve been thinking tons about this, Sherry! The only thing is that my blog seems like tidbits that don’t go together. =P I’ll have to keep thinking about a book theme! =) Can’t wait for *your* book to come out! =)

I am still working on two different books with two different people — one about the legacy of a man’s great-great-grandfather and the other is a story about the tragic accident that lead to a variety of twists and turns in court. We plan on publishing both books by year-end. I hope people find them interesting, but we’ll see … TBD (to-be-determined)!! 🙂

Sherry,
Happy to see you posting again. I can imagine you have been very busy with the two books. A funny coincidence that just two weeks ago, I went to a short story writing retreat and we were handed the same set of submission guidelines. You may never know why your “great” short story or article was never accepted or even read.
Glad to hear that you are very busy editing two books!!! I’m ghostwriting one, plus revising/editing two of my own – when I have the time which hasn’t been recently because I’ve had lots of other work – so I can understand how little time you have to blog or read blogs.
Just keep in touch. Don’t want to lose a good online friend.

Hello, Pennie. We haven’t virtually talked in, like, forever. So good to hear from you. And I’m thrilled with all your writing assignments. So proud of you, P. Keep up the good work.
Keep in touch? Pfffft! Of course. How could I not, you’re one of fav’s — 😉

Sherry, It has been a while. Several days ago, I had the most fantastic – and long – conversation/interview, though more on my side, with Samantha. I do hope there will be an opportunity when we are both less busy (ha-ha!) to also get to know each other on the phone.

Pennie, that’s very cool. Sam is going places. We will see that lady reporting on international television, writing international best-sellers or both. She’s hard-working and talented waaaay beyond most people I know … and humble. Her talent and humility are inspiring. You just want to reach out through the phone and squeeze her. I do. I AM going to meet her in person some day. And I would love to meet you, too, even if it means trekking to Mexico. Let’s do a SKYPE call this week if you have time. I’m available for a call before 2pm CDT every day this coming week. Will you send me an email with your SKYPE ID and times available, and if not next week, when?
BTW, the two books aren’t keeping me too busy … yet. I’m surprised at how quickly I’m able to edit the one biography — have to add lots of content, but it’s been really easy and fast — and the other is one I am very excited about, since it has lots of real life twists, turns and drama. I’m writing it from a woman’s journals. She’s adding some historical detail that she did not include in her journals. I’m putting the whole thing together, so it will become more time-consuming in a couple of weeks once she submits more information to me. What’s keeping me really busy is a contract I picked up locally. I have to go into their office to do all the work that may turn into something more long-term, but we’ll see.
Would love to talk, Pennie, please let me know — 😉

Ladies, thank you so, so much for your kind words! It was such a boost to my week, especially after feeling super unproductive these days! I’m so glad to have the both of you in my life. =) And Sherry, I loved learning more about the books you’re writing. Have you thought about posting snippets from them on your blog? =)

Sherry,
Agree about Samantha and talking about learning from the younger generation, I, for one, can learn a helluva lot from her. Would love to Skype with you but not next week as am super busy doing what I didn’t do this week and last when I had that work project. Let’s make it the week of August 8th. How about the 10th? Just have to ask my niece which is best because it’s her Skype I use.

Let’s see. The 10th is on a Wednesday. That’ll work. Also, do you know you can sign up for SKYPE for free under your own account name? I’ll send you my SKYPE ID in a private email. I look forward to it, Pennie — ❤

Think that with all the Skyping I may be doing with online friends, I’d better sign up. Will let you know but send me your address and ID nearer the date. Look forward to talking.

Hey, Sam, it’s hard NOT to say nice things about you — you’re so … awesome! I love the idea of putting snippets of them on my blog here. I definitely want to do that. I’ll ask the author if it’s okay with him regarding the g-g-grandfather biography. I don’t have much on the other book yet. Still waiting on some critical information from the author. To be continued … 🙂
