Writing Contest — Glimmer Train
Posted on February 2, 2011
Glimmer Train has another short story award for writers. If you’re interested, read more, visit the site for rules and submit a manuscript for consideration.

Upcoming deadline:
The February Short Story Award for New Writers closes February 28. See guidelines.
This category is open only to writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation over 5,000. First place wins $1,200 and publication in Issue 83 of Glimmer Train Stories. second- and third-place winners receive $500/$300 (or if chosen for publication, $700).
From the beginning, Glimmer Train has welcomed the work of emerging writers, and we are proud to present and preserve the very best in Glimmer Train Stories, a handsome print publication. In the brand-new Best American Short Stories, of the top “100 distinguished short stories,” six appeared in Glimmer Train Stories, second only to the New Yorker. We are pleased to say that, of those six, two were those authors’ first stories accepted for publication.

Can I send a short short for consideration in the February competition (around 1,000 words), or is that to short?

Hi, Dan, you presented a good question, so I visited Glimmer Train’s site.
I found their webpage with the rules to all their contests, and another page that addresses rules for February’s short story. The quote that relates directly to your question states:
“Most submissions to this category run 3,000 to 6,000 words, but can go up to 12,000 words.”
It appears that 1,000 words may be too few for the submission. Don’t take my word for it, though, I suggest you contact one of the editors of GT via email at kgillen@fulcoinc.com for clarification.
One thing I don’t think I noted was that Glimmer Train ONLY ACCEPTS FICTION submissions.
Wishing you the best!
